This week, Miss Gregory’s assemblies highlighted something special about Marple Hall. Through a series of photographs, students discovered just how many members of staff once attended the school themselves as children, and how many now have their own children who attend, or previously attended, Marple Hall.
It was a simple idea, but one that says a great deal about our community.
Schools often talk about belonging, but it is worth pausing to think about what it means when people choose to return to a place in different stages of their lives. Former students come back as teachers, support staff and leaders. Parents place their trust in us with their own children. Connections formed years or even decades ago continue to shape the community we have today. People do not stay connected to places that mean little to them. They stay connected because of the friendships, opportunities and support they experienced there.
That is what I value most about Marple Hall. Of course, we are a school that focuses on learning and achievement, but we are also a community. Every day students and staff encourage one another, support one another and – with 1800 people all in one place – sometimes fall out with each other. Together we help each other through both the ordinary and the more challenging moments whenever they may occur. The photographs shown this week in assembly were a reminder that the strongest schools are built not just on buildings or results, but on lasting relationships.
Have a nice weekend,
Joe Barker
