Marple Hall School’s finest Year 10 Mathematicians recently achieved outstanding grades in their first AS Maths modular unit exam. The Head of Maths Mr Kelly said “All the students worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserved their success”. Declan Burns, Jack Caldwell and Joel Rogers achieved top marks equivalent to Grade A, and Miriam Apsley two A grades. Amazingly, the students have not yet sat their GCSE Maths but managed to achieve the top grades in AS Maths. Their pass rates were as good as any of the local 6th form colleges.
Marple Hall School is the first school in Stockport to do early entry AS Maths and the project was funded by the Raising Aspirations Fund. The students are now preparing hard for the next module at the end of May.

Saturday 27th February marked the 15th Annual Stockport Ladies Speaking Contest held at Stockport Town Hall, and Marple Hall romped to victory for the second year running. This year, it was talented Sarah Harrison who took home first prize. Pitted against five rival schools and in front of a large audience, Sarah spoke passionately about ‘Disturbing Signs’. Based loosely on Luther King’s inspiring ‘I have a dream’ speech from 1963, Sarah spoke of her initial nightmare of a ‘cardiganized’ Britain, but went on to air her concerns over racial hatred poisoning politics. The judges described it as ‘deeply thought-provoking’ and ‘incredibly well-crafted’. Sarah won the trophy and a £30 cash prize, and Miss Nichols accepted a £150 cheque for the school. Many congratulations to Sarah.
